The Langley Rivermen are the city’s Junior A hockey team, playing in the British Columbia Hockey League. If you’re after a Friday night out that costs less than the big arena and has plenty of noise, this is it. The team’s own site is the place for schedules, rosters and ticket links, and it also lists fan and community programs and hockey camps.

Where they play

The team’s website lists the George Preston Recreation Centre, in the Township of Langley, as its address. According to the BCHL Network, the Rivermen started out at the Langley Events Centre and moved to the George Preston Arena in 2016, after the Vancouver Giants came to the LEC. Our Events Centre page covers where the bigger-league teams play. Check the team’s schedule for each game’s location before you head out.

A short history

The Rivermen’s own history page traces junior hockey in Langley back a long way:

  • 1973-74: The Langley Lords join the BC Junior Hockey League.
  • 1981-82: The Langley Eagles return to the league. In 1983-84, they won the league championship and the Mowat Cup, before relocating to Chilliwack by the end of the 1987-88 season.
  • 1995: The Langley Thunder start a run that includes the league finals in 1996. They later became the Hornets, who moved to West Kelowna at the end of 2005-06.
  • 2006-07: The Chilliwack Chiefs relocate to Langley as the Langley Chiefs, moving into the Langley Events Centre in 2009-10.
  • 2011-12: A new ownership group takes over the Chiefs, and the Rivermen are born. The BCHL Network says the team played its first game on September 23, 2011.
  • 2013-14: The Rivermen’s best regular season so far, finishing 37-13-3-5 and winning the Ron Boileau Memorial Trophy for the league’s best record.

How to follow along

Start with the team’s site for the schedule, and for tickets and the live stream link. For the league as a whole, the BCHL’s own site has standings. If you want a different kind of hockey, the Langley Events Centre hosts the WHL’s Vancouver Giants and others, and you’ll find them on our teams page.
